I photograph the street. Most of the time nothing happens, and then for half a second something does, and I am either ready or I am not.
These are the ones I was ready for.
They come from years of walking, in Jerusalem, Brussels and elsewhere. Some are portraits of people who saw me and let me stay. Some are of people who never knew I was there. Some have nobody in them at all: a merchant at work seen from across a street, a pigeon somewhere it has no business being, a shadow that arrives on a wall for a few minutes each afternoon and then leaves.
There are two ways these pictures happen. Sometimes I walk until something stops me. It can be a person or a situation, but it is always a feeling first, and only then do I start to look properly and work at it. And sometimes there is no time for any of that. Something assembles itself in front of me and I press the shutter before I have understood why. Those ones I only really see later.
I am not looking for the extraordinary. I am looking for the reason I stopped.
The exhibition keeps growing. I am still walking.
